Nazar (नज़र)
Many Indians believe that when a belonging or a loved one of yours is praised or appreciated to be nice, beautiful and worthy it attracts the envy or “devil” of those around them that intends on causing harm to that loved one or belonging.
While you can not refrain from getting things other people like/want, what many people do instead is to reduce the nazar it gets or negate it. One way to do this is to put something on that car/belonging (or child) to make it look unattractive. Drawing of ugly faces, devil figures, making unattractive markings and putting black ugly dots on little children are a common way to avoid getting nazar.
Through my shoot I have tried to portray Nazar in a human form, who always bears the brunt of other’s misfortunes and who is tired of this constant condemnation. People have always feared this Nazar and tried finding solutions to mitigate the effects it may have. I have used objects which supposedly attract the negative energies and keep them away.
